Ommo Bio

Julie Moon & Adria Otte’s OMMO began in 2014 as a platform to investigate the complexities and histories of the Korean diaspora and their places within it. The duo’s unique compositions may be experienced as evocative, atmospheric soundscapes which create an abstract yet fertile space for these investigations. Configurations of voice, analog and digital electronics, free and structured improvisations, as well as theater, ritual and song, may all be employed in the process.

Julie Yoon

'Art as process' is the thematic ground of Julie Moon's creative journey -- whether it be explorations of identity, investigations into different improvisational mediums, or navigating a world of ‘stuff’ to develop and hone her intuition for what matters.  Julie began training classical piano since 2 years old. She earned her MFA and MA at Mills College and her BA at Cornell University and continues her role as a music educator in the Bay Area. Moon has studied with Grahame Bailey, Chris Brown, Kevin Ernste, Fred Frith, Carol Krumhansl, Annie Lewandowski, Roscoe Mitchell, Zeena Parkins, Steven Pond, and Robert Schwartz.

on diaspora...

"Diaspora...refers to a process, a condition, a space, and a discourse: the continuous processes by which a diaspora is made, unmade, and remade; the changing conditions in which it lives and expresses itself; the places where it is molded and imagined; and the contentious ways in which it is studied and discussed...

Diaspora is simultaneously a state of being and a process of becoming, a kind of voyage that encompasses the possibility of never arriving or returning, a navigation of multiple belongings, of networks of affiliation." --Paul Tiyambe Zeleza
